While greenfield development may be exciting and rewarding, giving engineering firms and architects an opportunity to show off a wide array of skills, the most challenging discipline of all is brownfield redevelopment, which is all about finding ways to reclaim and redefine abandoned industrial or military sites. The going is often tough, with plenty of surprises along the way, but the effort always pays off in the end. Among the locations that BPR has brought back to new, vibrant life are the former Vulkan shipyard in Bremen, the partly decommissioned Hanomag factory in Hannover and a abandoned railroad shunting yard in Munich-Laim.
